How to Get Into Live Wedding Illustration:
A Creative Journey

Live wedding illustration is a beautiful way to capture the essence of a couple’s special day in a unique and artistic manner. If you’re an artist looking to delve into this enchanting field, here’s a brief guide to help you get started

1. Finding Your Style

Before you can start illustrating weddings, it’s vital to develop a distinct artistic style that reflects your personality and excitement for art. Take time to experiment with different techniques, mediums, and aesthetics. Look at other artists for inspiration but focus on what sets you apart. Your style should resonate with the type of weddings you want to illustrate. Whether it’s whimsical, romantic, or modern, your unique flair will attract couples looking for something special.

I took inspiration from artists such as Pencil & Grace, as I love her use of precision and shadowing while still being loose with the watercolours. Additionally, I admire Chloe Alexandra Studios for their brushwork and ability to capture the likeness of their subjects.

I also delved into digital software, which came from speaking with While Hugo Sleeps Co. I believe there’s a place for using technology to our advantage as artists and exploring how it can aid us in being more efficient and quicker when working in a fast-paced environment.

2. Engaging with Vendors in the Industry

Networking is crucial in the wedding industry. Connect with wedding planners, photographers, florists, and other artists. Attend bridal shows, workshops, and local events to meet potential collaborators. Building relationships with vendors can lead to referrals and collaborative opportunities that enhance your visibility. Consider joining local art and wedding groups on social media platforms to expand your network.

I had conversations with a number of my fellow live event artists. It was beneficial to understand if this line of work was something that would fuel my passions and creativity. Being able to understand the challenges they faced in the beginning helped me learn how to ensure that I would be able to tackle them.

Luckily, artists are one of the kindest and most supportive groups within the industry. Myself, Oak, and Scribble Illustrations created a social media group called the Live Artist Networking Society of over 20 members, to create a safe, supportive environment for like-minded people who share tricks, tips, and advice—from art material recommendations to business management support and general guidance.

3. Defining Your Offerings

Decide what services you want to offer to couples. Will you specialise in creating live illustrations during the ceremony, or will you provide personalised illustrations of guests as wedding favours? Consider offering a variety of packages, such as live sketches, custom portrait commissions, or illustrated guestbooks. Understanding your offerings will help you communicate clearly with potential clients and tailor your marketing efforts.

My advice is not to spread yourself too thin. I rushed into wanting to create everything, which can lead to burnout, effectively draining all your creative juices. Trial and error with products to see what is popular and, most importantly, what you truly enjoy providing.

4. Practice Mock-Ups for Social Media

Before you start showcasing your work, create mock-ups of what your live illustrations could look like at a wedding. These mock-ups can be based on your previous work or imagined scenarios. Share these on your social media platforms to give potential clients a taste of your artistry. High-quality images and engaging captions can help draw in an audience and establish your brand.

5. Branding and Marketing Yourself

Decide how you want to present yourself to the world. Your brand should reflect your style and the emotions you want to evoke in couples. Create a cohesive look for your social media profiles, website, and promotional materials. Consider your logo, colour scheme, and overall aesthetic. Use storytelling to connect with your audience; share your journey, your artistic process, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your work.

If, like me, you struggle with honing in on the branding side of the business, there are a variety of freelancers with expertise in creating logos, colour schemes, and even website creation. I personally used Funky Enough, a graphic designer offering a variety of packages to suit your needs. She was able to capture exactly the vibe I was seeking to convey with my business.

6. Gaining Experience Through Friends and Family

One of the best ways to hone your skills is by practising at the weddings of friends or family. This not only provides valuable experience but also generates content for your portfolio. Offer to illustrate their wedding for free or at a discounted rate in exchange for permission to showcase the artwork on your platforms. This can also help you gather testimonials and build your reputation.

My first wedding was for Mr and Mr Davenport, who are my best friend’s uncles. They invited me to their wedding to paint in the evening. I learned valuable lessons that day regarding my timings, set up, and confidence in engaging guests to have an illustration.

7. Utilising Platforms for Promotion

Leverage social media and other platforms to promote your work. Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok are fantastic for visual artists—share short videos of your illustration process, time-lapse videos of live events, or before-and-after images. Consider joining platforms like Hitched or other wedding vendor websites that cater to couples looking for services. Participating in wedding fairs and expos can also help you reach a larger audience.

My advice would be not to spend too much money on these services. Hitched has a free package, which I have always used and received leads from. I don’t believe you need to pay for a yearly subscription for a pro membership. Likewise, wedding fairs can be expensive and, depending on the venue, hit-and-miss, so ensure you are prepared to spend what you can afford.

Conclusion

Entering the world of live wedding illustration can be a rewarding venture filled with creativity and joy. By finding your style, networking with industry professionals, defining your offerings, and effectively marketing yourself, you can build a successful career capturing love stories through art. Remember, practice makes perfect, so embrace every opportunity to learn and grow in your craft. Happy illustrating!
